I should also point out that another important reason why I didn't bother to
explicitly elicit more precise user stories from him is because it isn't worth
my time to.  I charge $80/hour for my expertise in software development and
other computer services.  Last I checked, he didn't sign a software development
contract with me.

If he truely wants to explore XP with an open mind at significantly reduced
cost, he has a wide variety of literary sources at his disposal, both online
and dead-tree.
