I expect you could predict I'd choose your alternate 2): preallocate 5K
chunks of memory.

You say "too bad if some memory is wasted." I have 128M of RAM. I'm using
maybe 1M for colorForth and maybe 8M for chip layout. The rest is wasted.

It's impossible not to waste memory. But you can choose to waste it in a way
that confers some advantage. Perhaps simplifying the application.
