I went up to Aroma Computer in Modesto CA and sat down at a bench, tried
various combinations of floppy drives and motherboards/cpu/video and had
5 copies of colorforth using
http://www.colorforth.com/trouble.htm:
"
Trouble with 'save '
Floppy controllers are awfully slow. With a fast computer/bus it may miss
commands or data bits. COLOR.COM may not respond to 'save ' You must somehow
copy COLOR.COM to sector 0 to make a bootable floppy.
DOS can write a bootable floppy with DEBUG. In a DOS window type:
debug COLOR.COM
w100 0 0 7e
q
"
No combination worked.
The tech went and made a full format Floppy with system and copied
color.com from
http://www.colorforth.com/install.htm
to his desk top and then copied it to the floppy
He then booted from this floppy and executed color. It worked!!!
I bought that system and and came home It consisted of:
MSI K7T TURBO KT133A M/B LE 79.00
AMD DURON 1.2GT 69.00
GeFORCE 2 MX400 64MB AGP W 59.00
ATX POWERSUPPLY 29.00
floppy drive from home
_____
$236.00
plus taxes
I went home and played with the new system and ColorForth
decided to try one more time to get ColorForth started on my
eMachines 366id by making system floppy and copimg color.com to it.
and booting and running fom this floppy. It worked!!! ???
I have tryed every method but this color.com did not save to floppy.
The eMachines 366id has a
Pentium(r) II Processor Intel MMX
Rage Pro AGP 2X
and now runs color forth.
The
MSI motherboard 815EPT Pro-R
CELERON 700MHZ FCPGA
did not run color forth from floppy but did with
GeFORCE 2 MX400 64MB AGP W
installed . The GeForce disabled the onboard vidio which allowed
colorforth to run form the system floppy.
This is what I think I have learned about booting ColorForth:
To install Colorforth on Windows 98 Machine:
Format 3 data Floppys then make a boot flopy by
Formating Flopy in a: drive 1.44 Mb (3.5") select Full format and Copy
system files
From http://www.colorforth.com/install.htm
Get Color.com and save on desk top.
copy Color.com to the floppy in a:
from the Start button select ShutDown and Restart click OK.
Windows will shutdown and then restart by reading first 9 cilenders from
the floppy in a:
When the flopy stops reading remove boot flopy in a: and put formated flopy
in a:
Save to floppy by typing: save a
If floppy writes 10 cylinders then the Floppy disk is compatible with
Colorforth.
If ColorForth splash screen shows correctly then the Video is compatible.
if neither happens then MotherBoard/CPU/Video hase addressing conflicks with
ColorForth. The gforce 2 AGP video card is compatible with ColorForth
and will disable on board vidio if present and possably remove address
conflics and try again.
Try mother board without on boad vidio and install the gForce2 AGP Card.
