Granted. I'd love to write this system on a contemporary computer.
However, the babel of peripherals would make actually using it an ordeal.
The target for all this are the latter Commodore computers: the C64, C128,
and their floppy drives (which run on a 6502!).
One reason is to create a synthesizer out of multiple, synchronized SID chips,
only available in those machines.
Secondly, the peripherals are fixed and of a simple enough design for a single
person to comprehend, and well documented after 20 years of use.
It's a bit like Latin: a dead language that you know won't change. :)
And the hardware technology is very easy to modify and extend.
And old C64s are cheap. :)
