Subject: Grandmother Cells in Semantic Memory
Date: Tue Sep 10 05:14:08 1996
In AI parlance it is absurd to think of a "grandmother" cell that
is the seat of the concept of your Grandmother Helen. But it is
not absurd to think of a mini-grid of concept fibers COLLECTIVELY
holding the concept (but not the name) of somebody's grandmother.
In the ASCII brain-mind diagram below, three separate concepts --
labeled as "H" for "Helen" -- "*" for "cat" -- "$" for "dog" --
are shown coexisting in a random arrangement on the flat sheet of
the cortex. Each such conceptual minigrid functions as a logical
and massively redundant unit so that no concept is dependent upon
a single "grandmother" cell to reside in, and massive parallelism
is preserved with regard to the inputs, activation and outputs of
each concept. For further details of this standard model of mind
