Well if you're going to add to that list, add learning forth to the list too!
Jeff has quite a few quips about ANSI Forth making it hard for forth
programmers to learn machineforth!

As with all of these things, to really master your tools, you need to know
what happens on the silicon level; understanding how the engine works
"under the hood".  Learning C or Lisp or Smalltalk won't break you, and 
will let you read other people's code.
